Prepare a Quilt for Long Arm Quilting

Whether you are quilting it yourself, or you are sending a quilt to me, here are some steps that will make the process go more smoothly.

Tops

  • All seams are stitched closed.
  • All pieced border edges are basted/stay stitched.
  • No loose threads (front and back).
  • Pressed.

Backing

  • Backing must be at least 4 inches wider on each side of the quilt top. For example: a 60" x 80" quilt top needs a 68" x 88" backing.
  • Pieced backing:
    • Remove selvages on sewn edge.
    • Lock stitch seam ends.
    • Square.
    • Trim uneven edges.
    • Press seams.
